It’s not been a bad Tuesday for me so far.
I’ve been having a bit of trouble with my FitBit Charge 2 lately due to the faulty strap finally throwing in the towel.
So after finishing a great morning of coaching, I brought it back to Harvey Normans and they replaced it with the newer Charge 3 model.
First of all thanks to Harvey Norman- that was great service.
Secondly, a few clients have this model so I’m delighted to be able to be able to try it out myself.
So, let’s get stuck into this weeks blog.
What’s one of the key differences between fit, healthy people, and unfit, unhealthy people?
Of course, I’m not talking about people who aren’t as fit as they’d like due to illness, accident, caring for a sick family member, etc.
I’m talking about everyday people who have the opportunity and ability to take decent care of their basic health and fitness needs, but don’t.
I see a lot of people who manage to successfully stick to a consistent health and fitness routine for years and years, and reap the rewards of their consistent efforts in the form of a much higher quality of life.
I also see a lot of people who consistently struggle to maintain a consistent health and fitness routine for more than a few short weeks. They start, they stop.
They start for a few weeks, they stop for a few months or years. And you don’t need me to tell you how useless an approach this is.
It’s the equivalent of adding €5 to your savings account every Monday, and withdrawing €7 from it every Tuesday. It doesn’t take long for things to start turning pear-shaped!
So what’s the key difference between fit, healthy people, and unfit, unhealthy people?
Here it is.
For fit, healthy people, taking care of their basic health and fitness needs is massively non-negotiable.
For unfit, unhealthy people, taking care of their basic health and fitness needs is massively negotiable.
You see, fit and healthy people will work around travel, family demands, bad weather, good weather, holidays, weekends, last minute schedule changes, stag parties, hen nights, sickness, moving house, social events, accidents and injuries, unplanned events, etc. to keep themselves in good health and physical condition.
They don’t need convincing of why it’s so important to stay fit, energised, strong, a healthy weight, mobile, etc. because they feel affect it has on their everyday life, and they see the value in that affect.
It’s as much a part of their character as anything else. Their health and fitness routine is integral to living a decent quality lifestyle, and that’s such an important aspect of everyday life for them that they will do their utmost to maintain it no matter what’s going on.
Life still happens of course, and with it missed workouts, less than stellar food choices, etc. but these are the exception and not the norm.
But that’s not the case for unfit, unhealthy people. Their health and fitness routine is highly negotiable, which is evident by the fact that they don’t really have one.
Good weather, bad, low energy, weather, working late, going on holidays, busy at work, not in the mood, etc. can all be used as justifications to not exercise consistently or make consistently poor food choice.
And while this isn’t a problem if done for a week or two, it’s a huge problem when it becomes your normal way of life.
If you want to be a fit, healthy person, and why wouldn’t you, then you must focus on making your health and fitness routine massively non-negotiable.
If you don’t then you will never have a rewarding quality of life- a sedentary lifestyle supported by crappy food and lifestyle choices simply doesn’t reward that, and it never will
