Steve McGrath- Owner and head coach
Ok, here’s a bit little bit about me.
I’m the owner and head coach of Steve McGrath Health & Performance based in Fotapoint Enterprise Park, Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork.
I’ve been a coach for over 15 years and have a BA in Strength & Conditioning. Over the past few years I have grown my business from a small 1500 sq. ft. facility with no staff to a 4440 sq. ft. facility with a team 2 great coaches.
I opened my facility with the aim of supporting our clients to live healthy, active and more rewarding lives. As a husband (shout out to my beautiful and unreal wife Susan) and father to a great little girl Isabel (and a son on the way), I truly believe that living a healthier lifestyle allows you to get the most out of life and your realtionships.
I’d love to say I’m a naturally healthy, fit man but tunfortunately that’s not true. I’ve had to put a lot of time and effort into overcoming a lot of health, fitness and lifestyle challenges.
For a long time I found myself in a nasty rut where I was constantly fatigued and struggling to get through the day, drinking to the point of ill-health, massively in debt (with nothing to show for it!!) and chrocincally stressed.
I’ve a very addcitive personality and this has led me down the road of drinking 12 cans of coke and lucozade a day, eating 3+ bars of chocoalte a day and living on deli/fast food!!! All this resulted in me getting gastritis, an absolutely horrendously painful stomach condition, as well as an agressive skin condition which didn’t do much for my confidence.
Thankfully I was able to overcome these issues and get out of the rut I was in and now teach these same principles to our clients. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can do it!
To help manage my stress levels and keep me focused, I find nothing better than hammering out a few Irish tunes on the banjo and tin whistle, much to the delight of my wife Susan, daughter and son 🙂
I’m a big believer in making your health and fitness routine a part of your life, without it taking over it, and I truly believe that everyone has the time and ability to do it.
Taking care of your strength, fitness, cardiovascualr conditioning, nutrtion, stress levels, mental health, sleep, etc. will positively impact every area of your life (mental health, relationships, work, etc.) and it doesn’t have to take over your life. They just need to be a consistent a part of it.
So that’s a litle about myself, and as you can see, a big strength of mine as a coach is that I can relate to my clients, because I’ve been in so many of their shoes!!
A bit about my own background who I am. what I like to do in my spare time and why I love working in the fitness industry.
I’ve been a personal trainer with 6 years and have been lucky enough to have traveled and got to see some amazing places doing what I love to do.
Growing up I was heavily involved in sports mainly in G.A.A and would have always been an extremely active person who couldn’t sit still for too long (just ask my mother)
When it came to my own physical attributes I would have been very fit but also quite physically weak and thin, which naturally had a negative effect in lots of areas of my life not only in regards to playing sports.
When I was 21 I moved to Australia and while there I started doing gym based exercises properly for the first time. I couldn’t believe the difference in not only my physical health, but also with how it helped build up my confidence as a person and helped me realize my true potential.
My goal as a coach is to help each and every client to become a better version of themselves in life, and I truly believe that exercise, having correct nutrition to fuel your body and mind while living a healthier life can really play a major role in this.
I’ve been a personal trainer for over 8 years after starting my fitness journey later in life. By the time I reached my early twenties I was 4 stone over weight with a 20-30 cigarette a day habit and no knowledge or experience of how to get my body back to it’s natural and ideal sate. It was during this time that I became aware of how much mindset, nutrition and routine can have an affect on one’s progress.
It is not an easy thing to confront a lifetime of poor choices and habits but there is nothing more rewarding than taking back agency over your physical and mental well-being while learning how to recognise the warning signs/old patterns in order to ensure you’ll always have the tools to find your way back.
I spent 2 years training and coaching in Phuket Thailand as a Thai fighter and conditioning coach. I train in a variety of disciplines such as powerlifting, bodybuilding, mobility/durability training and muay thai/kick-boxing. I believe life is all about balance and the body is no different. This is why I implement a wide variety of training modalities, in order to provide a physical spectrum of balance where my client moves with confidence and ease as well as possessing the necessary power strength and endurance to navigate daily living with strength and ease.
I strongly believe that we all have an amazing ability and duty to honour our bodies through movement and play but after decades of inactivity it can seem like an overwhelming prospect. Once you reconnect with your body and mind you will discover aspirations and goals that previously would’ve been outside the realm of what you believed possible for yourself. My mission as a trainer is to make those previously impossible goals your reality.
